DE: Extending Threat With Obsidian Rose

Looks like meat is back on the menu boys!

One of the ways we're going to min-max my Black Heart Kabal list is to explore other Obsessions.  I've already got myself a rock solid list, the only thing I'm going to do now extending the threat range.  We just have to make sure we have enough units in a detachment to buy enough dedicated transports and the right mix of Obsessions.

What I'm going to do is turn the majority of my Blasters and Kabalite troops into Obsidian Rose.  This gives them 6" more range on all their weapons; which gives them 24" Blasters and 30"/15" Rapid-fire Splinter Rifles.  After, I'm going to stuff as many of them as I can into Black Heart Raiders so the 6+++ makes them harder to kill.  I can do this because all our transports have the Drukhari keyword and no Obsession specific ties.  This allows me to mix and match our Obsessions to get the most out of our units.

Quick note:
In case you're wondering, I think Flayed Skulls' extra 3" movement can be nice for more Wych-oriented lists using Raiders as the delivery mechanism.  Just keep in mind that not every Obsession works with others.  It just happens to be that Obsidian Rose and Black Heart's bonuses work simultaneously, without conflict and in perfect concert with one another.  It's a match made in hell.

Don't fret guys, this is very much with the fluff and it looks like it's intended.  We're supposed to be able to mix and match different Kabals, Cults and Covens to make a better army.  I think, if I'm to be completely honest, that people are just so used to Dark Eldar being a punching bags of the fucking game that all of a sudden, everything is question when we're suddenly powerful.  While I can see crap like the infinite CP loop and Agents of Vect not requiring Black Heart units as a problem, this is something I see as intended.  Just think of it as bribes and deals being struck before the battle.

Anyways, I didn't mean to rant.  This is what the updated list looks like:

1999 // 8 CP
Obsidian Rose Battalion +3 CP

HQ:
Archon, Agonizer, Blaster, PGL = 94
Archon, Agonizer, Blaster, PGL = 94

TROOP:
10x Warriors, 2x Blaster, Dark Lance = 114
10x Warriors, 2x Blaster, Dark Lance = 114
10x Warriors, 2x Blaster, Dark Lance = 114
10x Warriors, 2x Blaster, Dark Lance = 114

+++

Black Heart Spearhead +1 CP

HQ:
Archon, Agonizer, Blaster = 91
Warlord: Cunning, Living Muse

TROOP:
7x Warriors, Blaster = 59

PARTY BUS:
Raider, Dark Lance = 85
Raider, Dark Lance = 85
Raider, Dark Lance = 85
Raider, Dark Lance = 85
Raider, Dark Lance = 85

HEAVY:
Ravager, 3x Dinsintegrators = 125
Ravager, 3x Dinsintegrators = 125
Ravager, 3x Dinsintegrators = 125

+++

Black Heart Air Wing +1 CP

FLYER:
Razorwing, 2x Dinsintegrators = 135
Razorwing, 2x Dinsintegrators = 135
Razorwing, 2x Dinsintegrators = 135

Stalk thy enemy.  Slay thy enemy.

Increasing overall threat range is exactly what we want as a shooty army.  It gives greater distance between our fragile units and our enemies, and allows us to easily threaten even the most heavily armored units in much greater volume.  Extra range allows us to set the tempo of the game and control our opponents through the use of kiting and forcing desperate situations.  With Strategems such as Fire and Fade, you'll be able to pull off some amazing circumstances that your opponents will surely loathe you for.

Let's take a closer look at our Firepower with respect to Range:

15 Disintegrators at BS3+ at 36"+ range
9 Dark Lances at BS3+ with 4 of these shooting from 42" range
9 Blasters at BS3+ with 8 of these shooting from 24"+ range
3 Blasters at BS2+ with 2 of these shooting from 24"+ range
3 Razorwing Missiles at BS3+ at 48"+ range
41 Splinter Rifles at BS3+ with 28 of these shooting from 30" range, 15" Rapid-fire

The pluses at the end of the range represent all the unaccounted movement.  As you can see here, extending the range of our weapons is primarily to benefit the multiple Blasters I have in each unit.  If you think about it:  Moving a Raider within 24" of something pretty much turns the thing into a Ravager with Dark Lances.  You get the extra S8 AP-4 D6 damage shots at full ballistic skill and if you have Archons nearby to give re-rolls, all the better.  The one thing I want you guys to take away from all this is that extra range is always good for a shooty army.  You want to be able to control the battlefield with your movement and through sheer firepower.  The extra threat range gives us the ability to control virtually any engagement as long as it's favorable for us.  This is control at its absolute finest.

I hereby decree this list as the Kabal of the Black Rose using the units that I've selected.

THERE Is Your Enemy.

Boys’ Club, Short Film, Review And Interview

Boys' Club is an irreverent and funny Story of two young men trapped in a bunker after the apocalypse. The audience's reaction to the story was a mix of OMG and laughter. The premise starts in the synopsis and delivered on the punch line.

I saw Boys' Club at the 2019 FilmQuest film festival (website). It was nominated for Best Student Short.

I would recommend this for adults who are alright with what is shared below and are able to see the humor in the situation.

Synopsis

A deteriorating sex addict spots a sex doll outside of his underground apocalypse bunker.

Boys' Club was written and directed by Troy Dewinne. Here he shares his inspiration for this movie and what he is working along. He also talks why he became a filmmaker and other things he likes.

What was the inspiration for Boys' Club?

It was a simple question at first:

How can I make masturbation integral to the plot without losing the audience to a slapstick comedy headspace?

Once I figured out the post apocalypse setting and found a real Cold War bunker I could use, the rest was (deleted from my browser) history.

What project(s) do you have coming up you're excited about?

I'm currently in the finalizing stages for Gobble, an animated television series about two goblins trying to become the realm's first goblin pop musicians. There are no sex dolls (so far), but still heavily a dark comedy with a lot of fantasy-like drugs. Look out for Gobble next year as we have a pitch bible, script, and proof of concept that will be going through the film festival circuit!

What was your early inspiration for pursuing a career in film?

Way back in high school my friend Ethan Dirks and I made these poor quality YouTube parodies. They were terrible, but were getting decent views for the time (20,000–150,000). My biggest revelation was after uploading a parody video for Friday by Rebecca Black, Rooster Teeth uploaded a parody video months later with the same exact premise...and it was terrible!

Made me think: We came up with an idea before an actual film company and we did a better job!

Definitely started the ball rolling for my inevitable film career.

What would be your dream project?

Hyperion by Dan Simmons is my favorite novel bar none. If I was able to direct an adaptation of that book, either feature or television series that would 100% be my dream project.

What are some of your favorite pastimes when not working on a movie?

I've been making really dumb music with my friends as a pass time for a few years now. We hang out, improv some lyrics and chords, and then search through the muck for some semblance of a song. Sometimes it works, most times it doesn't. Always fun!

What is one of your favorite movies and why?

Chungking Express directed by Wong Kar-wai. That film had me sitting in my car for an hour trying to comprehend it. The crazy thing: Chungking Expressisn't a hard film to understand, it's how the director represented the story (cinematography, acting, sound design, editing, everything!) that just floored me when I first saw it. Highly recommend. So weird, but SO GOOD!

What's going on everyone!?

Today for the #2019gameaday challenge I played a solo game of Carcassonne and although I didnt place last I didn't place first. You know what our good friend Ricky Bobby says about that. ;)

It was a close game until the last 3rd of the game I would say. But that doesn't stop it from being any less fun!

I don't know if I'll ever be sick of this game or not but I can assure you that it will not be any time in the foreseeable future,  lol.

As always, thank you for reading and don't forget to stop and smell the meeples! :)

This week on Super Adventures, I hope you don't mind that I'm still writing about all these games I played with my month of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate last November, because I'm on the last part now and I'm not quitting until it's done.

Once again I should point out that I only played most of these games for an hour or so, long enough for me to get distracted by something else and turn them off, but not long enough for me to accurate assess the majority of their content or the intricacies of their gameplay. I'll also point out that these aren't just Xbox games! I played most of them on PC, and a lot of them can be played on lots of systems.

The Gotek Floppy Drive Emulator In The IBM PC World

The Gotek floppy drive emulator is a simple, cheap and little device that, as its name says, emulates a floppy drive.  There are many varieties of these devices and they usually come with a USB port on the front of the unit and a 34-pin header + 4-pin power header on the back.  While originally intended to replace disk drives in industrial, sewing and musical equipment, they can be used with standard PC floppy controllers.  However, as they come they are at best diamonds in the rough, so in this blog entry I will describe how to make these devices more useful for vintage IBM PCs and compatibles.

ASOIAF: Rodrik Cassel 40Pt Army

Let's get down to business.

Winter has come.  While there are some people out there that prefer to go maneuver-heavy with Robb or face-smashy with Greatjon Umber, I like going Rodrik Cassel.  The reason why is because his tactics cards are absolutely bonkers and making units Vulnerable just makes a smashy faction even smashier.

First, let's take a look at Rodrik Cassel and see what he offers to our army:

A true soldier.

As you can see, Rodrik is a soldier who has an Order to make the opponent's unit Vulnerable after Attack dice are rolled.  The timing for this is exceptionally important because it's what Sworn Sword Captains have as well and it's considered one of the best 1-point attachments in the game.  Vulnerable is huge for someone like Rodrik because it unlocks his Tactics cards and skyrockets the damage potential of all your units.  Having Vulnerable on something after you charge it would mean you re-roll all hits and your opponent has to essentially re-roll all their successful saves.  It pretty much means the Stark army will obliterate units that have low saves or punch through tougher targets that can normally deflect their blows.  Peeling ranks off enemy units will also keep your units around longer as the enemies' damage potential will decrease.

Let's take a look at Rodrik's tactics cards:

All that martial goodness!

Martial Superiority is one of the best defensive tactics cards in the game.  It triggers off when the enemy unit attacks and that dice rolls less dice AND loses all abilities until the end of the turn.  Now, it isn't as powerful as some of the silences we've been before where it lasts until the end of the round, but this card doesn't need any conditionals like expending condition tokens or anything else.  You cast it, boom, and most of the opponent's plans are foiled.  This card is amazing at stopping something like Gregor + Flayed Men from rolling a unit while you set up for a counter-attack.  To make things even more interesting, if you're going after Rodrik's unit, good luck.  Having Weakened on top of this card pretty much means Rodrik's units going to stay around.  Combat Prowess is a great follow-up card when used with Rodrik's unit or with any unit under the influence of Vulnerable.  What if your opponent rolls poorly and you don't need to spend the Vulnerable token?  Guess like he's being silenced and unable to respond with any defensive tactics cards.  It's really fierce when used on the charge as there are fewer things in the game that interacts with that timing window than when a friendly unit attacks.  Lastly, we have Press the Advantage.  This is another one of those cards that trigger off the attack so you can't use a Sworn Sword Captain's Orders and then play this card because it escapes the window.  What this card does is kick your opponents when they're already down because of the Critical Blows on an already Vulnerable target.  That's why I have taken a unit of Tully Sworn Shields with Rodrik because it makes them one of the tankiest units in the game while giving them the opportunity to do bigger damage than their stats suggest.

Here's the list:

Faction: House Stark
Commander: Rodrik Cassel – Master–at–Arms
Points: 40 (4 Neutral)

Combat Units:
• Stark Sworn Swords (5)
  with Sworn Sword Captain (1)
• House Umber Greataxes (7)
with Robb Stark – The Young Wolf (3)
• Grey Wind (0)
• House Tully Sworn Shields (7)
  with Rodrik Cassel – Master–at–Arms (0)
• Stark Outriders (7)
with Brynden Tully – Vanguard Infiltrator (3)

Non-Combat Units:
• Sansa Stark – Little Bird (3)
• Petyr Baelish – Littlefinger (4)

Made with ASOIAFBuilder.com

Let me try and explain some of these choices super quick.  The Stark Sword Swords are simply one of the best offensive units in the game for the cost.  With Stark Fury and 8 dice on a 5-point unit and the ability to make someone Vulnerable, the damage potential for this unit is huge.  Great Axes deal a huge amount of damage and can definitely wreck heavy cavalry if they're already engaged with them.  Robb Stark as an attachment makes them regular infantry speed and gives you the ability to launch yourself out there on a Maneuver trigger on the tactics board.  This makes two units that can do it in the army and that will surprise your opponents a lot!  The fact that Robb (and Bran) come with their Dire Wolves is one of the best things about Starks.  These free wolves not only come with great abilities, but they're a free activation and deploy to be used in battle.  Grey Wind is especially good because he is able to apply Vulnerable onto a unit if already used, or apply it beforehand so it can be consumed using Rodrik's own ability or tactics cards.

I already explained a little bit about the Tully Sworn Shields above, but with Rodrik's tactics cards, this unit becomes a very jack-of-all-trades unit.  It's already super defensive with Shield Wall and 3+ save, but cards like Martial Superiority just takes it over the edge.  While the defensive stats normally lower damage expectations, Press the Advantage and Vulnerable tokens in general greatly increases its damage potential.  As for Stark Outriders, I think they're a great, solid unit at 7 points.  With Brynden Tully however, they can be one of the most annoying units in the game thanks for their great flanking ability and healing on retreat.  A lot of the Stark tactics cards play incredibly well with Outriders as well thanks to their unpredictable damage potential.  Just remember that with 7-point units, you can also decide to trade out the Sworn Shields for a unit of Berserkers if you want some more face-smash.

"And yet you betrayed me.."

As for NCUs, I really like Sansa Stark with Rodrik because of her ability to recycle or tutor for exactly what is needed right then and there.  While we all try and anticipate everything that is going to happen in a game, Sansa offers us extra insurance that if an opponent rolls a 6 for a long ass charge you didn't anticipate and is rolling in with crazy Tactics cards in support, you always have a way to Martial Superiority him into the ground.  For my next NCU, believe it or not, I think Littlefinger is a solid choice for the Starks.  It's just comical that I'm taking both Sansa and Littlefinger in the same list, but his ability to claim Combat/Maneuver that unlocks the secondary capabilities for your Stark tactics cards while still reaping the benefit of other unclaimed zones is amazing.

Try out the list and let me know how you fair!

The Sinking City | Review

The Sinking City Review

Quick Facts:

  • Release date: 27 June 2019
  • Developer: Frogwares
  • Genres: Action-Adventure, Survival horror
  • Platforms: Nintendo Switch, Microsoft Windows, Xbox One, PS4

The Sinking City | Review

The Sherlock Holmes games' developer, frogwares has done a very good job this time. The Sinking City is a third-person detective adventure set in a fictional adaptation of 1920s New England, inspired by the works of influential (and, indeed, controversial) horror author H.P. Lovecraft. divers reveal an ancient cavern covered up underneath Oakmont loaded up with otherworldly statues of cosmic demons, and are driven mad by the discovery—a franticness that starts to spread through the city and awakens strange, vicious creatures the local people call wylebeasts. The game is divided between solving crimes and shooting beasts, despite the fact that the gulf in quality between each kind of play is quite wide.

The Sinking City places you in a detailed world loaded up with the incredible and absurd horrors befitting of any Lovecraftian story, yet gives a fresh however reverent take where others may have remained on the tracks laid about a century prior. So, while developer Frogwares' dig into Cthulhu legend has fantastic moments, the monotonous elements of this pulpy 1920s story can be the wrong kind of terrifying.

The Sinking City Review

The Sinking City starts solid. You'll soon find yourself on a beguiling whistle-stop voyage through Lovecraft's tall stories, investigating dammed caves for lost campaigns and managing with genealogy obsessed tyrants. Rather than insensitive map markers you often need to search out street corners yourself, setting pins and connecting the dots to unravel a wider mystery.

Robert Throgmorton, one of the first people you meet who looks like an ape. Later you find out (which sounds really fucked up) that it's because his literal father went to Africa and literally had sex with a female gorilla. This seems to be inspired by the short story Facts Concerning The Late Arthur Jermyn And His Family, where a man went to Africa, produced kids with a "white ape of some unknown species, less shaggy than any recorded variety, and infinitely closer mankind" and consequently fucked up his whole heredity from that point onwards. Apparently, Lovecraft's skill as an author did not stretch out to nuance.

The Sinking City | Review

As one may anticipate from a Lovecraftian game, combat, discovery, monsters, macabre and otherworldly imagery, and the visions that impelled Reed down this path in the first place progressively take a toll on both his health and sanity. This results in some disturbing psychological scenes, illusions, and psychosis. It's a real hoot.

The characters you interact with, however, are intriguing and well-acted, and I was pleasantly surprised by how unique and thematically, suitable each person is written and performed. From mob bosses to cult leaders to crooked politicians and that's just the beginning, every interaction felt interesting and helped to fill out the lived-in feel of Oakmont. unfortunately, this shed a glaring spotlight on the shamelessly recycled character models. It's particularly noticeable that the majority of the dark men you actually speak to have the same cartoonish face (he was racist for damn sure, he once described black people as "semi-human"). I found this very distracting, particularly during some of the most shocking moments that otherwise do a passable job of depicting the racial tensions of the era.

The Sinking City | Review

the voice acting is strong and the detective gameplay is the best aspect of The Sinking City. The "Mind Palace" makes an appreciated come back from the Sherlock Holmes games and works well here when piecing together observations and giving you more details on the tough calls you'll have to make. The greater part of the actual detective gameplay comes down to finding clues around the environment and using different archives around the city, for example, police records, the library, city hall, and different others to either find specific people or locations.

There aren't any obvious waypoints to guide you along, you'll constantly rely on your map as you search for specific street names or locations, which to be frank is really tedious and time-consuming. This is especially true in the earlier part of the game when you're forced to tromp all over the map before you've unlocked fast-travel locations. Most games would have quest objectives radiate outward from a central location, however, The Sinking City attempts to show-off its diverse neighborhoods by sending you through every one of them in turn. This felt good at the beginning as I was surprised by the different cultures and immense neighborhood within the island.  Notwithstanding, this immediately turned irritating as I looked for alternate ways around the maze of overflowed streets. I was all the more eager to sit on the long loading screens during fast travel than having to frequently plot routes that required jumping in an out of boats, staying away from infested zones, and getting around a few blocked paths.

The Sinking City | Review

The Verdict

Overall, as much as I adore the story and atmosphere of The Sinking City, it certainly feels like a budget title at times. If you can get past the weird Lovecraftian bits, weak combat, harmless jank, tedious and time-consuming navigation, and enjoy compelling stories, exciting environments, memorable characters, and a solid detective experience that won't hold your hand and throw tough choices your way, you shouldn't pass up on it.

Xenogears- Anti God Or Anti Demiurge?

There are an increasing number of Xenogears fans out there I think, it's an interesting game, but a game I have never completed.

I reached disc two at least a couple of times but the game is far far from perfect and after beginning as an amazing game, a game which you are thinking is going to be one of the greatest games of all time, unfortunately it gradually and then quickly runs out of steam almost from 3 hours in.

I really love some of the soundtrack though, it is a masterpiece and the vocals are awesome.

The big problem for Catholics with a lot of JRPGs is their blatant anti Catholicism and their promotion of false anti-God philosophies.

I have traditionally seen Xenogears as anti God in a really really big way...sham religion to control people, 'god' himself is an antagonist, reincarnation, etc etc.

but I recently saw a video that made me reconsider this a tiny bit, and the video has some good points. The argument is that the Japanese who are godless and largely propelling to eternal damnation like to use Christian terminology to make their games and stories seem more occidental and strange, often applying names incorrectly and with nothing to do with their original reference points. This is certainly the case in Xenogears in a way perhaps unparalleled.
And so whilst at the centre of xenogears there is this god thing trying to revive itself by farming and feeding itself humans who it has created, this thing isn't really a god at all, it is a demiurge a being that is itself created and yet has the capacity to create as if it were a god. So a created being posing itself is god is the enemy.

But then there is this wave existence- is this the true God? Obviously not, since how could God get trapped by a demiurge (which seems to have happened in xenogears) the whole stuff about the wave existence in xenogears is just incoherent, an all powerful being from another dimension is somehow trapped in a man made robot demiurge and wants to be set free....

So in xenogears we are not dealing with the true creator of the universe in any of this, we are not fighting uncreated existence, we are not fighting the supremely simple, perfect and holy God, we are not actually fighting the supreme being in any way, nor are we helping him escape from the demiurge.

Xenogears fails in as much as it does not bring to light to fact that whilst the demiurge Deus is a phony god that is rightly destroyed, there is a true God sustaining all things Who Himself exists without the need of any other, a God Who simply Is and cannot fail to Be, a God without which all things would fall back into nothingness.
Hear are some ideas of altering the plot to make Xenogears more Christian:

1) Wave existence has to go.
2) the continual reincarnations of elly and fei not true incarnations but vocations given by the true God
3) Just as the demiurge has his false religion in xenogears through the ethos, the true God too ough to His own religion in the world of Xenogears which is acknowledged by the end of the game to be true.
4) The true God wishes to see the destruction of demiurge through means of humans, as humans created this false god the true God wishes that they destroy it.
